The Zukertort Opening: Sicilian Invitation is usually reached by 1.Nf3 followed by a move that invites a Sicilian-style response, often creating an offbeat structure where Black’s queenside pieces and central pawns can become targets. In the deflection theme, the point is to lure a defending piece or pawn away from an important square so a tactical follow-up becomes possible. For beginners, the defining feature is not a fixed move order but the early flexible setup that can turn into a tactical trap if one defender is pulled off duty.

Look for positions where one black piece is doing two jobs at once, such as guarding a key square and defending a tactical weakness on the kingside or center. A deflection works best here when you can force that piece to capture, move, or block on a square that leaves another target exposed, often after White has developed smoothly from the Zukertort setup.
