Learn How to Back Rank Mate: Chess Endgame Pattern
This puzzle shows a classic back rank mate pattern in a tense middlegame-to-endgame setting. The key idea is that the enemy king has very limited escape squares because its own pawns and pieces block the back rank. When a heavy piece can invade the first rank with tempo, the position can collapse immediately. The x-ray attack is important here: one piece is lined up behind another, so a capture can clear the file for a decisive follow-up.
