Learn How to Use an Intermezzo: Tactical Refutation
This puzzle shows a classic middlegame intermezzo: a forcing move that changes the order of captures and turns an active position into a tactical refutation. In the Vienna Gambit, piece activity matters, but loose pieces and an exposed queen can quickly become liabilities. White uses a forcing check to gain time, disrupt coordination, and then win the queen by exploiting the fact that the opponent’s last move left key pieces undefended. The result is a decisive material gain, not a slow strategic squeeze.
