Learn How to Spot Back Rank Mate: Mate in 3
This middlegame puzzle shows a classic back rank mate pattern: the king is boxed in by its own pawns, and the key file becomes a tactical highway for heavy pieces. White’s attack works because the defending pieces are overloaded and the king has very little luft. In positions like this, a forcing queen sacrifice can drag the king into a mating net where rook coordination finishes the job. It is a strong example of a tactical refutation rather than a slow positional squeeze.
