A Scandinavian defense fork is a tactical motif that appears in the Scandinavian Defense, usually after 1.e4 d5 2.exd5, when Black develops the queen and pieces into positions where a fork can hit two valuable targets at once. The defining feature is the early queen move and the open central structure, which often creates fork chances for knights or pawns around d4, e4, and c2. For an intermediate player, this means looking for moments when one piece can attack the enemy king and queen, or queen and rook, in the same move.

To spot a Scandinavian defense fork, watch the squares that become weak after the queen recaptures on d5 or after Black plays ...Qa5+ and ...Nc6, since these moves often set up knight jumps with tempo. In your own games, use the fork when White’s king is still in the center or when the queen has wandered to an exposed square, because the Scandinavian structure frequently leaves multiple pieces aligned on the same rank or diagonal. The best forks in this opening usually come from a knight landing on c2, d3, or e2, or from a pawn fork that wins the queen and a minor piece.
