The ruy lopez trapped piece motif appears in the Ruy Lopez when a piece, usually a bishop or knight, is cut off by pawn structure and piece placement and cannot escape. A classic example comes after the defining moves 1.e4 e5 2.Nf3 Nc6 3.Bb5, where pressure on the c6 knight and the center can lead to a piece being trapped on the queenside or kingside. In these positions, the key idea is not winning material immediately, but restricting the opponent’s piece until it has no safe squares.

To spot this motif, look for a piece that has advanced before its supporting pawns or minor pieces are ready, especially after ...a6, ...b5, or a bishop retreat that leaves a knight or bishop boxed in. In your own games, use the Ruy Lopez structure to limit escape squares with pawns and control of key diagonals, then calculate whether the trapped piece can be attacked twice before it can move. The motif is strongest when the trapped piece is on the edge of the board and its retreat squares are covered by your bishop, knight, or queen.
