Learn How to Use an Intermezzo: Tactical Refutation
This puzzle shows a classic intermezzo idea in a middlegame-to-endgame transition: instead of recapturing immediately, White uses a forcing check to improve the position and expose a tactical weakness. The key is that Black’s active rook and bishop look dangerous, but one of the enemy pieces is hanging and the coordination is fragile. By inserting a forcing move first, White turns the opponent’s threat into a tactical refutation and wins material with tempo.
