Learn How to Spot Back Rank Mate: Mate in 1
This middlegame puzzle shows a classic back rank mate pattern: the enemy king is boxed in by its own pieces and pawns, while a rook on an open file can deliver the final blow. Even when the position looks materially balanced or even favorable for one side, a single tactical shot can end the game immediately if the king has no escape squares and no piece can interpose. In classical chess, these motifs often appear after development leads and loose back-rank coordination.
