In the Modern Defense, a discovered attack beginner tactic usually appears after Black fianchettos the bishop to g7 and later moves a blocking piece, opening a line for an attack on a target. The defining feature is that one piece moves away to reveal an attack from a bishop, rook, or queen already lined up on the same file, diagonal, or rank. In this opening, that often means the g7 bishop suddenly attacks the center or a pinned piece once the pawn or knight in front of it shifts.

To spot this idea, look for positions where Black has a bishop on g7 and a piece in front of it is the only thing stopping a direct attack on the king, queen, or a loose central piece. If you can move that blocker with tempo, the revealed attack can win material immediately, especially when the opponent has overextended in the center. Use the tactic when the move also creates a second threat, because in the Modern Defense the long diagonal often makes the discovered attack stronger than it first looks.
