Learn How to Spot Mate in 2: Back Rank Mate
This middlegame puzzle is a classic example of a forcing back rank mate pattern. White’s pieces are coordinated so that the enemy king has very limited flight squares, while the heavy pieces line up on open files to create a direct mating net. The key idea is attraction: a sacrifice draws the king onto a vulnerable square, allowing the rook to deliver the final blow. In classical chess, these combinations often appear when one side’s back rank is underprotected and the defender’s pieces are overloaded.
