Learn How to Use Zwischenzug: Intermezzo Tactics
This middlegame puzzle is a clean example of an intermezzo, also called a zwischenzug: instead of recapturing immediately, you insert a forcing move that changes the position first. The key idea is to use check, threat, or tempo to make the opponent respond while their queen or other valuable piece is overloaded. In classical chess, these moments often decide the game because one side’s material advantage can vanish in a single tactical sequence.
