Learn How to Spot a Zwischenzug: English Opening Puzzle
This puzzle is a classic middlegame example of an intermezzo, also called zwischenzug, where the strongest move is not the obvious recapture. White’s pieces are active, and Black’s queen is overextended, creating a tactical window to exploit a pinned piece and a loose defender. In classical chess, these positions often reward calculation over routine material grabs. The key idea is to use forcing moves to improve the position while keeping the opponent’s threats under control.
