Intermezzo Advanced Puzzle (Rated 1262): Spot Intermezzo — Defense

An intermezzo is an intermediate move played before the obvious recapture or defensive response. In this middlegame puzzle, the key idea is a defensive move that uses check to interrupt the opponent’s plan. Rather than immediately addressing a material threat, the defender creates a forcing question for the enemy king. This changes the move order, gains valuable tempo, and keeps active pieces coordinated. The pattern is especially useful when your position is materially worse but your queen or rook can generate immediate counterplay.
