A defining feature is the pressure on a piece that cannot move without exposing a more valuable piece behind it, often in positions from the King’s Indian, Nimzo-Indian, or Queen’s Indian. In these openings, the pin is often created along a diagonal rather than a file, and it can shape the whole middlegame plan.

To spot an indian defense pin, look for a bishop or queen lining up with an enemy knight on c3, f3, or e2 while the king, queen, or rook sits behind it on the same diagonal. Use it by increasing pressure on the pinned piece with moves like ...Bxc3, ...Qe7, or ...Nc6, or by attacking the center while the pinned defender is restricted. If you are facing the pin, break the line with a timely pawn move or exchange the pinning piece before it becomes a tactical weakness.
