French Defense Clearance in Chess

In the French Defense, “french defense clearance” is the tactical/strategic idea of clearing a line or square so a piece can move or a pawn can advance with tempo. A defining feature is often the d-pawn or c-pawn clearing a path after the central tension—commonly around the d4/d5 or c4/c5 breaks, depending on the structure. The goal is to remove blockers so your queen, bishop, or rook can activate on the newly opened file or diagonal.
