French defense attraction is a tactical motif where you lure a key defender in the French Defense onto a square where it can no longer protect the king, a critical pawn, or a mating line. In typical French structures, this often happens after the central tension from ...e6 and ...d5, when White uses a sacrifice or forcing move to drag a piece away from f6, d5, or e7. The defining feature is not the opening itself, but the forced relocation of a defender that breaks Black's coordination.

To spot french defense attraction, look for positions where Black's king safety depends on one piece guarding a vital square, especially around e6, f7, or the dark squares near the king. If you can force that defender to capture on a square that opens a file, diagonal, or mating net, the attraction is usually working. In practice, this motif often appears with checks, sacrifices on e6 or f7, or a baited capture that clears the way for a queen, bishop, or rook to invade.
