French Defense Advance Variation Advanced Pawn in Chess

In the French Defense Advance Variation, the “advanced pawn” refers to the white pawn on e5 after 1.e4 e6 2.d4 d5 3.e5. This pawn becomes a forward, space-gaining target and a long-term strategic lever, shaping both sides’ piece placement and pawn breaks. In many lines, it’s supported by c3 and/or f4, while Black aims to undermine it with ...c5 or ...f6.
