Defensive Move Beginner Puzzle (Rated 1628): Defend — Save Material

A strong defensive move does more than survive an attack: it can create a tactical counterthreat. Here, Black’s active queen and bishop place pressure near the white king, but the bishop is vulnerable and the queen’s placement allows a tactical response. The key idea is to coordinate the queen with the opponent’s loose pieces, using a fork and skewer to challenge both threats at once. This turns a dangerous middlegame position into one where White preserves material and maintains equality.
