Defensive Move Beginner Puzzle (Rated 1007): Defend — Quiet Move

A defensive move is not always passive. In this chess endgame, the key idea is to use the king actively to challenge an exposed rook while reducing the impact of a tactical fork. White has extra material and an outside passed pawn, but Black’s rook creates pressure against a pinned bishop. The right defensive concept combines king activity, piece safety, and tempo: improve the king while forcing the opponent’s most active piece to respond.
