Benoni Defense Discovered Attack Beginner Chess Puzzles

In the Benoni Defense, a discovered attack beginner pattern appears when one piece moves and uncovers an attack from another piece, often on the queen, rook, or king. The defining feature is the Benoni pawn structure with Black’s ...c5 and ...e6 against White’s central space, where a bishop, rook, or queen can suddenly become active along a diagonal or file. In these positions, the move that “gets out of the way” is often more important than the move that attacks directly.

To spot this motif, look for a line where a pinned or blocking piece can move with tempo, revealing a stronger attack behind it. In Benoni positions, this often happens after White’s central pawns advance and pieces line up on the e-file, c-file, or long diagonal, so check whether moving a knight, bishop, or pawn opens a discovered attack on the enemy king or queen. Use it by first placing the hidden attacker on an active line, then moving the front piece to create the threat and win material or force a tactical gain.
