The defining feature is the Benoni pawn structure with Black’s ...c5 and ...e6 against White’s central space, where a bishop, rook, or queen can suddenly become active along a diagonal or file. In these positions, the move that “gets out of the way” is often more important than the move that attacks directly.

To spot this motif, look for a line where a pinned or blocking piece can move with tempo, revealing a stronger attack behind it. In Benoni positions, this often happens after White’s central pawns advance and pieces line up on the e-file, c-file, or long diagonal, so check whether moving a knight, bishop, or pawn opens a discovered attack on the enemy king or queen.
