Richard Rapport (White) Puzzle: Check — Intermezzo

An intermezzo, or zwischenzug, is an unexpected forcing move played before an obvious recapture or defensive response. The key idea is to exploit the opponent’s exposed king, pinned pieces, or overloaded defenders before resolving the original tension. In this position, an intermediate check changes the priorities completely: Black’s active pieces and dangerous pressure become vulnerable because the king must respond first. After the king moves, White can address the underlying material problem with improved tactical clarity.
