Pal Benko (White) Puzzle: Win Material — Rook
This chess endgame is decided by concrete rook activity rather than slow manoeuvring. When an enemy pawn is insufficiently protected, an active rook can often capture it while maintaining pressure against the opposing king. The resulting material gain matters even more in a reduced position: each extra pawn increases the value of king activity, passed-pawn potential, and rook access to open ranks. Calculate the opponent’s best reply before assuming that a seemingly exposed rook is vulnerable.
