Max Euwe (White) Puzzle: Back Rank Mate — Queen

A back rank mate occurs when a king is boxed in by its own pawns and has no safe escape square on the first or eighth rank. In this position, Black’s active queen and rook create a direct mating net against the white king. White has material and active-looking pieces, but king safety outweighs those assets immediately. This is a useful classical chess reminder: a single exposed back rank can decide a middlegame position at once.
