Defensive Exercises From Karpov Games Puzzle: Defend — Save Material
A skewer can look decisive when a valuable piece attacks a less valuable target behind it. Here, Black’s knight is exposed to the queen’s line, while the rook on the open e-file creates a counter-threat against White’s bishop. The key defensive idea is to change the geometry of the position with a pawn move. That move attacks the queen and gives Black time to resolve the skewer. Good defense often comes from creating a stronger threat, not from passively saving the attacked piece.
