Joseph Henry Blackburne (White) Puzzle: Force Check — Intermezzo

An intermezzo, also called a zwischenzug, is a forcing move inserted before the expected continuation. In this chess endgame, White uses rook activity to expose the enemy king and place a centralized knight under severe tactical pressure. Black can try an intermediate check to change the move order and gain time, but forcing play must be assessed to its conclusion. The key is that the temporary check does not solve Black’s underlying problem: the attacked piece remains vulnerable after the king is driven to a new square.
