James Mason (White) Puzzle: Perpetual Check — Queen
A perpetual check is a drawing resource in which repeated checks prevent the opposing king from escaping danger or improving its position. Here, Black is materially behind, but White’s exposed central king and weakened surrounding squares give the active queen a powerful source of counterplay. The key is not to search for a material recovery: the queen can keep the king under immediate pressure and force a repetition. This is a classic example of king safety outweighing material in a tactical chess endgame.
