Gideon Stahlberg (White) Puzzle: Win — Check
An intermezzo, or zwischenzug, is a forcing move played before an expected recapture or response. The most powerful version is an intermediate check, because the opponent must answer the check before continuing with their original plan. In this position, Black’s active pieces create tactical tension, but an exposed queen and loose minor piece allow White to gain time and recover material. The key idea is to prioritize forcing moves over immediate captures when king safety and piece coordination are unstable.
