Learn How to Spot Intermezzo: Crushing Tactic
This puzzle shows a classic opening tactic in the Slav Defense Exchange Variation: an intermezzo that changes the move order and wins material. Instead of reacting directly, Black uses a forcing check to improve the position and expose White’s queen to a tactical refutation. The key idea is that loose pieces and an exposed queen can be punished immediately when the opponent’s king is still in the center. In classical chess, these short tactical shots often decide the middlegame before it begins.
