The Chebanenko Variation is a well-known line of the Slav Defense, usually reached after 1.d4 d5 2.c4 c6 3.Nf3 Nf6 4.Nc3 a6. The move ...a6 is the defining idea: Black prepares ...b5, gains queenside space, and keeps flexible options for the rest of the opening. For intermediate players, it is important because it often leads to solid, strategic positions rather than sharp tactical battles.

You can spot the Chebanenko Variation by Black's early ...a6 in a Slav structure, especially when White has played c4 and Nc3. In your own games, use it if you want a reliable setup that supports queenside expansion and makes White commit before Black chooses the central plan.
