Learn How to Use an Intermezzo: Sicilian Defense Puzzle
This Sicilian Defense puzzle is a classic example of an intermezzo, also called a zwischenzug. Instead of recapturing immediately or following the most obvious forcing line, White first uses a tactical move that changes the position in White’s favor. The key idea is that the opponent’s last move created a loose piece and a temporary tactical weakness, so a direct counterattack wins time and material. In the opening, these motifs often decide whether one side keeps the initiative or falls behind.
