Learn How to Deflect: Fork Tactic
This puzzle comes from the Semi-Slav Defense and shows how a forcing check can pull the defender off balance. The key idea is deflection: one piece is dragged away from an important square so that a follow-up tactic becomes possible. Here, the position is already tactically loaded because White’s active knight and bishop create threats against Black’s king and loose pieces. In the opening, these short combinations often decide whether one side keeps the initiative or loses material.
