Ruy Lopez Exchange Puzzle (Rated 1109): Refute — a Queen Attack

In this middlegame, Black's queen is attacked by White's queen — the classic hanging-piece moment. Most players instinctively retreat, but here the correct idea is a tactical refutation: capture the attacker instead. When White recaptures with a pawn, that pawn move opens a file, letting a rook surge in to pick off a rook and bishop for the queen. White's weakened pawn shield and exposed king make the position collapse. The lesson: when a piece hangs, first ask whether the attacker is genuinely protected — the best defense is often a sharper counter-capture.
