Learn How to Spot an Intermezzo: Tactical Refutation
This middlegame puzzle shows a classic intermezzo idea: instead of recapturing or defending in the obvious way, Black inserts a forcing check that changes the whole position. The key is that White’s queen and bishop are overextended, while Black’s active knight and queen coordinate against loose pieces and the exposed king. In classical chess, these tactical refutations often appear when one side has gained space but left important pieces undefended.
