Learn How to Use an Intermezzo: Tactical Refutation
This puzzle comes from the Queen's Gambit Declined and shows a classic middlegame tactical refutation. The key idea is an intermezzo: instead of recapturing immediately, Black inserts a forcing move that changes the balance of the position. White’s queen is active but also overextended, and the king safety factors favor Black. When a piece is pinned or a queen is exposed on a central square, forcing moves can win material and shut down counterplay at once.
