Learn How to Use an Intermezzo: Winning Material
This Queen's Gambit Declined puzzle is a classic middlegame example of an intermezzo, also called a zwischenzug. Instead of recapturing immediately, White first inserts a forcing check that changes the position in a decisive way. The key idea is to exploit king safety and tactical overload: Black’s queen and pieces are active, but the exposed king and loose coordination make the position vulnerable to a tactical refutation that wins material and improves White’s attack.
