Learn How to Use an Intermezzo: Crushing Tactic
This puzzle comes from the Ponziani Opening and shows a classic middlegame tactical idea: an intermezzo, also called a zwischenzug. Instead of recapturing immediately or making a routine move, White inserts a forcing check that changes the position in White’s favor. The key is that Black’s queen and bishop are overextended, while White’s pieces are active and ready to exploit the exposed king and loose material. In classical chess, these tactical shots often decide the game on the spot.
