Modern Defense Kotov Variation Puzzle (Rated 970): Win Material — Hanging Piece Tactics
This middlegame puzzle is a classic example of a hanging piece tactic in the Modern Defense. White’s pieces look active, but one central knight is loose and the queen and bishop are vulnerable to a tactical refutation. Black can use a forcing sequence to win material by first removing the defended piece, then exploiting the exposed queen and bishop. The key idea is that active-looking pieces can still be tactically overloaded when the king is uncastled and coordination is poor.
