Learn How to Win Material: Tactical Refutation
This puzzle comes from the Mieses Opening and shows how a single tactical refutation can flip the evaluation in an opening position. White’s pieces are active, but the king is still in the center and the queen/knight coordination creates tactical tension. The key idea is to notice when a pinned or overloaded piece can be exchanged away, leaving the opponent’s position structurally worse and materially down. In classical chess, these short forcing sequences often decide the game before the middlegame fully begins.
