Learn How to Use an Intermezzo: Tactical Refutation
This puzzle shows a classic opening tactic where a forcing intermezzo changes the evaluation immediately. Instead of recapturing or retreating, Black uses a check to keep White’s king awkwardly placed and to expose loose pieces. The key idea is that the opponent’s active bishop on d5 is overextended, while White’s king remains in the center. In classical chess, such positions often reward forcing moves that combine check, capture, and tempo.
