French Defense Tarrasch Variation Puzzle (Rated 1098): Skewer the Queen — Chess Puzzle with Theory & Hints
A skewer is one of the most decisive tools in the middlegame: a long-range piece attacks a valuable target, and when the target steps aside, a still more valuable piece behind it is exposed. Here White's bishop is lined up against Black's queen with only a pawn sheltering it. Worse for Black, the queen is overloaded — it is the sole defender of several key points — so it has no way to run. Capturing the queen immediately hands White a decisive material advantage that decides the middlegame.
