Learn How to Use an Intermezzo: Crushing Tactical Refutation
This French Defense Horwitz Attack puzzle is a classic example of an intermezzo, also called a zwischenzug. Instead of responding to the opponent’s threat in the most obvious way, White inserts a forcing move that changes the tactical picture and wins material. The key idea is that checks and captures can override normal move order, especially when the enemy king is exposed and a defender is overloaded. In sharp opening positions, one well-timed tactical shot can turn a slightly worse position into a decisive advantage.
