Learn How to Spot an Intermezzo: Tactical Gain
This puzzle comes from the Englund Gambit and shows a classic intermezzo idea in the middlegame. Instead of recapturing or defending in the most obvious way, White uses a forcing tactical move to create a bigger threat first. The key is that the opponent’s queen, rook, and bishop are all loosely coordinated, so a temporary sacrifice can win time and material. In classical chess, these in-between moves often decide the game before the position simplifies.
