Learn How to Use an Intermezzo: Tactical Refutation
This puzzle shows a classic opening tactic where an intermezzo changes the order of capture to win material. In the Englund Gambit Declined, one side has an active bishop and a vulnerable piece arrangement, so a forcing check can expose the king and create a tactical refutation. The key idea is that not every capture should be answered immediately; sometimes a stronger forcing move first wins the exchange and leaves the opponent unable to keep the balance.
