Learn How to Spot Zwischenzug: Crushing Intermezzo
This puzzle shows a classic intermezzo, also called a zwischenzug, in a sharp middlegame from the Englund Gambit Complex. Instead of recapturing automatically, the stronger side uses a forcing in-between move to expose tactical weaknesses around the king and win material. The key idea is that the opponent’s last move created a tactical target, and the best reply is not the most obvious one. In practical classical chess, these moments often decide the game immediately.
