Learn How to Spot Zwischenzug: Intermezzo Tactics
This puzzle is a classic example of an intermezzo, also called a zwischenzug: instead of responding in the most obvious way, you insert a forcing move that changes the evaluation. The key idea is that a seemingly active enemy piece can be punished because it is overextended, undefended, or tied to a tactical motif. In practical chess, these positions often appear in the middlegame when material is already imbalanced and one tempo can decide everything.
