Learn How to Find an Intermezzo: Tactical Refutation
This puzzle shows a classic intermezzo in the Dutch Defense Staunton Gambit: instead of recapturing or defending in the most obvious way, Black uses a forcing check to change the position first. The key idea is tactical refutation. White’s queen is active but vulnerable, and the exposed king plus loose pieces create a concrete target. In sharp openings, a single forcing move can win material by exploiting checks, captures, and threats before the opponent can coordinate.
