Learn How to Use an Intermezzo: Tactical Refutation
This Caro-Kann Defense puzzle is a classic middlegame example of an intermezzo, also called a zwischenzug. Instead of recapturing or making a routine move, White uses a forcing check to change the order of operations and expose the opponent’s queen and king. The key idea is that tactical pressure can outweigh material concerns when the enemy queen is loose and the king is still uncoordinated. In classical chess, these forcing moves often decide the game immediately.
