Learn How to Spot Smothered Mate: Mate in 1
This puzzle is a classic middlegame tactical finish where the king’s own pieces become the cage. In smothered mate patterns, the enemy king is boxed in by its surrounding pieces and cannot capture the checking knight because every escape square is covered. Even when one side is materially ahead, a single forcing move can end the game immediately if the king has no flight squares and no defensive capture is possible. It’s a great example of how tactics can override static evaluation.
