Sicilian defense swallowstail mate is a mating pattern that can arise in Sicilian Defense positions when the enemy king is trapped by its own pieces and a rook or queen delivers the final blow along the back rank or a file. The defining feature is the classic swallowtail shape: the king is boxed in by two or more blocking pieces, leaving no escape squares and no way to capture the mating piece. In practice, it often appears after the Sicilian has opened lines on the kingside or center and one side’s pieces are overloaded defending the king.

To spot this pattern, look for a king with limited flight squares, especially when pawns and minor pieces have fixed the king in place and a rook, queen, or bishop can control the last escape square. In Sicilian positions, the tactic is most likely when Black has castled short and the dark squares around the king are weakened, or when White’s attack has forced pieces onto the back rank and the king is pinned behind them. Use it by first restricting the king’s mobility, then checking whether a final mating move works because the blocking pieces cannot move or capture in time.
