Learn How to Spot Smothered Mate: Mate in 1
This puzzle comes from the Petrovs Defense and shows a classic middlegame mating pattern. The key idea is a smothered mate: the king is boxed in by its own pieces, so a single checking move can become decisive when every escape square is covered. Even though White has a huge material edge, the position is tactically sharp because the black king is exposed and the knight on f2 creates a forced finish. In classical chess, these patterns often appear when development and king safety matter more than material.
